International Mother Language Day

Mother language means a language that is used by the people of a country to express their ideas, thoughts, feelings and emotions clearly. 21st February was declared the international mother language day by UNESCO in 1999 , in order to show honour and respect to the existing mother languages of different countries. It is a red-letter day in the history of Bangladesh. The day has a long glorious historical background. It is a matter of great regret that, the rulers of Pakistan tried to impose "Urdu" as the state language upon us instead of Bangla. In 1952, the Pakistani ruler Muhammad Ali Jinnah declared in the public meeting that "Only Urdu and Urdu shall be the state language of Pakistan". The people of this country protested that declaration because their mother language was Bangla. They claimed to make Bangla one of the official languages in addition to Urdu. The student of Dhaka University raised protest rallies along with general people on 21st February. Police fired on the rally. Salam, Barkat, Rafiq and many students died on the spot and hundreds of others seriously injured. It was the only incident where people sacrificed their lives for mother language. 21st February is our mother language day. The objective of observing the day is, to pay homage to the language martyrs. Every year we remember this day with profound respect. On this day, everybody holds a black badge and walk to the Shaheed Minar . Different social, culture and political parties observe the day. the day is a government holiday. Many TV channels broadcast special programmes on this occasion. The day is very important for the people of Bangladesh and we are proud of this day.
