Bangabandhu Satellite-1

A satellite is a machine that is launched into space and moves around the earth. It collects information. Bangabandhu Satellite -1 is the first geostationary communications and broadcasting satellite of Bangladesh. The satellite has been named after the father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Bangladesh entered a new era through launching its own satellite. Bangladesh is the 57th nation in the world to own a satellite. The satellite was designed and manufactured by Thales Alenia Space and its contractor was Space x. It was launched on 11 May 2018 and the launch station was Kennedy space center on Merritt Island, Florida, USA. Its ground control stations are in Betbunia and Gazipur. The total cost of the satellite was 248 million US dollars. The satellite was expected to be located at the 119.1 East longitude geostationary slot with a total mass of 3700 kg and 2 deployable solar array and batteries.In the outer section of the satellite,the flag of of Bangladesh is painted and on the flag,there is written "Bangabandhu-1"in English and Bangla. Government formed a new organization "Bangladesh Communication Satellite Company Limited"(BCSCL) with the aim to operate the Bangabandhu Satellite-1. The satellite provides Ku-band and C-band television broadcast and data relay services across Bangladesh. According to officials, we had to spend $14 million for satellite connectivity yearly. It is expected that Bangladesh will not only save such amount of money in future, but also would earn a lot by letting other countries to release the unused bandwidth. Private TV channel operators and DTH service providers will be the main consumer of the satellite. The weather department, as well as the defense sector, wil get benefit from the satellite. This satellite will also help telecommunication system during natural disaster. The satellite will narrow the digital divide,as it will help taking the broadcast and telecom services to rural areas. The launch of this satellite brings both prospect and challenge as its expected to help the country save foreign currency,while the challenges remain in effectively running the venture. Bangabandhu Satellite -1 's mission is expected to last at least 15 years.
